Conceptual Journey: This collage work is an exploration of dialogue between two artists that shared an artist residency programme which was part of Cork 2005, European Capital of Culture programme.

Rather than choose a travel destination, the artists preferred to select a passage of travel with no destination. Hence, they elected to spend the residency aboard a ship and in a process of ongoing transit, symbolising for them, the passage into the land of the dead. The environment chosen enhanced this work symbolically and functionally with a clear focus on transitional and intermediate spaces.

They explored universal concerns involving: death, loss and complications relating to identity - personal enquiries that are generally difficult to articulate and share, resulting in a style of work that is evocatively minimal. What they have hoped to depict is the powerfully compressed excitement attendant upon very slow, almost invisible, transformations of consciousness uniting conscious and unconscious realms of experience.

This collage work is a collaboration between Andrew Johnson and psychotherapist, Ger Staunton
